Instituto Francocanadiense

The Francocanadian Institute was a scientific and literary society that came into conflict with the Catholic Church during the 19th century in French Canada.

It was founded in Montreal in 1844 as a discussion forum and free library, installing modules throughout French-speaking Canada. He criticized the institutionalism of the church in Quebec and exhibited books as undesirable.

Religious leaders like Ignace Bourget, bishop of Montreal (1840-1876), attacked the institute, which turned to Rome for support. In 1869 the church condemned the movement and most of its members parted.
