Maria Pozsonec

Maria Pozsonec

Maria Pozsonec (Dolga Vas (at Lendava), January 16, 1940 - there, April 4, 2017) was a politician in Slovenia. She had been deputy in parliament since 1990 on behalf of the Hungarian indigenous minority in Slovenia. Pozsonec was from home from education and worked in bilingual (Hungarian and Slovenian) education in northeastern Slovenia from 1959.

Since 1980, she was active in the nationality policy for the Hungarian community, including chairman and later Vice-President of the Community of Hungarians in Prekmurje. After winning her first mandate in 1990, she was re-elected in 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004.

The institute of a "nationality delegate" in Slovenia is based on the care for minorities set out in the Constitution. The members of both indigenous minorities (Hungarians and Italians), like all other citizens, participate in the elections to the 88 parliamentarians, but also choose a nationality delegate for the Hungarian and Italian community. This additional voting right is independent of the number of Hungarians living in Slovenia (approx. 8000) and respectively. Italians (about 3000); There is therefore no choice for them.
