Michael Aschbacher

Michael Aschbacher (April 8, 1944) is an American mathematician who is best known for his work in the field of finite groups. In the 1970s and 1980s he was one of the leading figures in completing the classification of finite single groups. It later appeared that the classification was incomplete because the case of the quasidun group was not completed. This gap was determined by Aschbacher and Stephen D. Smith in 2004 in two books, covering a total of 1300 pages. Aschbacher is currently the "Shaler Arthur Hanisch" professor of mathematics at the California Institute of Technology.

In 1966, he obtained his B.Sc. at the California Institute of Technology. In 1969 he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1970 he joined the faculty of the California Institute of Technology, where he became professor in 1976. In 1980 he received the Cole Prize. In 1990 he was elected at the American National Academy of Sciences. Books Externe link
