Amyntas IV (Amintas IV) (Greek: Αμύντας), was king of Macedonia in 359 BC. , from the archaeological dynasty.
He was a son of King Perdiccas III of Macedonia and a grandson of Amyntas III of Macedonia and Eurydice. He was also a cousin of Philippos II of Macedonia and Alexander III the Great. When his father died in a fight against the Illyrians under Bardylis, in which the Macedonians were crushed, he was at the very young age the throne. His uncle and the brother of Perdiccas III, Philippos was appointed to his reign. That same year, Philippos called himself to King of Macedonia; and so Amyntas IV was shot from the throne. Philippos was recognized almost immediately by the Macedonian popular assembly and crowned King under the title Philippos II. He apparently did not see Amyntas as a threat and even married his daughter to keep him happy. When twenty years later Philippos II died and Alexander III the Great followed him, of course, Amyntas had become more than a century and Alexander III saw him as a threat. Alexander III accused him of conspiracy and therefore condemned and executed it in a traditional manner.
