Escudo guineoportugués

The escudo was the currency of Portuguese Guinea, circulated in this dependency between 1914 and 1975. Its exchange rate was equal to that of the Portuguese escudo. Replaced the Guinean real at a rate of 1000 reales = 1 shield. The shield was divided into 100 cents. Portugal issued banknotes (from 1914) and coins (from 1933) for use in Portuguese Guinea. After independence, the Guinean weight was replaced with the shield at par. Currencies

In 1933, coins were introduced in denominations of 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents and 1 shield. Coins of 2 ½, 10 and 20 escudos were added in 1952, and finally coins of 5 escudos were introduced in 1973. Tickets

In 1914, banknotes were issued by the National Ultramarine Bank in denominations of 10, 20 and 50 cents (emergency money). In 1921, the denominations of more value, from the ticket of 1 shield of up to the one of 100 escudos, were introduced. The paper money series was expanded when a new value of 500 escudos entered circulation in 1945. Finally the last denomination of the family of notes was added, the one of 1000 escudos, that was introduced in 1964.
