One innovation in the programmable logic matrix was the generic logic matrix (Generic array logic) or GAL. Both were developed by Lattice Semiconductor in 1985. This device has the same logical properties as the PAL, but it can be erased and reprogrammed. The GAL is very useful in the prototyping phase of a design, when a failure in the logic can be corrected by reprogramming. The GALs are programmed and reprogrammed using a PAL programmer, or using the circuital programming technique in secondary chips.

A similar device called PEEL (programmable electrically erasable logic or programmable electrically erasable logic) was introduced by the International CMOS Technology (ITC) corporation.
