Because the British shorthair often crushed perches to create the bully type, many British shorthaired men wear the long hair. As a result, long-haired kittens are regularly born. There are more and more breeders who breed further with these "lumps", resulting in the British long hair. The variety is not recognized internationally by the umbrella organizations such as the FIFe in Europe or CFA in the United States. However, there has been recognition in the Netherlands by a number of independent cat associations since 2012.
