Drogo de Metz

Drogo, also known as Dreux or Drogon (June 7, 801-8 December 855), was an illegitimate son of Emperor Charlemagne and his concine Regina.

As one of the few children who survived his father, Drogo's prospects for political power were very favorable. There was only one son of Charlemagne older than him. He undertook the clerical life in 818, was appointed abbot of Luxeuil in 820, agreed to become bishop of Metz in 823 and archicapítulo in 834, a position he held until his death. His younger brother, Hugo, was also ordained. He was extremely faithful to his half brother Ludovico Pío and managed to exercise great power. The influence of Drogo began to fade after the death of Lodovico and fell further after the death of Hugo in 844. Even so he managed to secure the production of the Sacramentario de Drogo, to which he gave his name. He is buried in the Church of the Abbey of San Arnulfo de Metz.
