Hearing (interrogation)

Police interrogates man at Japanese railway station

A trial, including interrogation or interrogation, is an inquiry into which a suspect or witness is being interviewed by a police or judicial officer. Cross-examination questions are asked from different sides. The purpose of a trial is to obtain more information. In suspicion of a crime, it may be a means of proving and thus leading to a confession by the suspect.

A suspect can rely on silence in most countries. This does not apply to a witness: he is sworn and may only be silent if he has professional secrecy or right of retention.

There are various trial methods, such as good cop / bad cop and the Zaanse trial method. A suspect may also be put under pressure to make false confession, for example through torture or chantage. Human rights organizations try to denounce countries where this kind of trial is being applied. Also see
