Huis Chalençon

Weapon of the house Chalencon-Polignac

The Chalencon or Chalencon-Polignac house is one of the oldest French noble families, from the Velay region in the current department of Haute-Loire.

The Polignac house is first mentioned in 870 and originated from the Velay burggraven. They received the title of King of the Mountains (Rois de Montagne) and were more or less independent until the house dug out in 1385.

In 1349 Guillaume, Mr. van Chalencon married Valpurge, inheritance of the Polignac burggraven. After the extinction of the Polignac house, the family used the name Chalencon de Polignac (Chalencon-Polignac) and again Polignac from 1421.

In 1780 Jules de Polignac (1745-1817) was elevated by Louis XVI of France to Duke of Polignac. A descendant of his youngest son, Prince Camille de Polignac, devoted the throne of Monaco to the person of Reinier III, son of Count Pierre de Polignac and Princess Charlotte of Monaco in 1949.
