David Nassy

David de Isac Cohen Nassy (Suriname, February 1747 - March 23, 1806) was one of the leading figures in Surinam's cultural life in the second half of the 18th century.

David Nassy was born in Surinam, educated by his father in the notary and fulfilled the secretary function of adjutant gabay in the Jewish-Sefardian community Beracha ve Shalom (Jews and Peace) in Jodensavanne. He was unsuccessful as a coffee planter, following his father as a juror (sworn) of the Jewish community, but fled in 1776 for his creditors to Jodensavanne.

Nassy wrote the first prozastuk in the Literature Extensions of the Society The Surinamsche Letterkind. In 1788 he completed the important Essai historique sur la colonie de Surinam (1789) of which S.H. Brandon, M.P. de leon, S.J.V. de la Parra and J. de la Parra were co-authors and whose Dutch translation appeared in 1791 as the history of the colony of Surinam.

In 1792, Nassy left to North America (Philadelphia), returning in 1795 and appointed Doctor. He continued to act as a publicist and wrote, among other things, the Lettre Politico-Theological Moral (1798) directed against a Dordt anti-Jewish pamphlet. Over David Nassy
