fluorimetry

General outline of a fluorimeter

A fluorimeter is a laboratory device used to measure fluorescence parameters: its intensity and the distribution of wavelengths of the emission spectrum after the excitation by a certain spectrum of light. These parameters are used to identify the presence and quantity of certain specific molecules in a medium. Modern fluorometers are able to detect concentrations of fluorescent molecules as low as 1 part per billion.

Fluorescence analysis can be several orders of magnitude more sensitive than other techniques. Its fields of application include chemistry, biochemistry, medicine and environmental monitoring. For example, it is used to measure chlorophyll fluorescence and thus to investigate plant physiology. Types of fluorimeter
