Fracture of red

The fracture of Rauw is a break in the earth's crust that originated in East Belgium in the Memorial Age.

Over 200,000 years ago, before the Memorial Day, the Meuse flowed from Liège completely differently than it is now, and continued eastwards toward Germany. Only after the Meuse poured into the Moselle, he continued his way in the western direction via the Oosterkempen towards the North Sea.

The Roerdalslenk originated from two major shear fractures: in the northeast the Peelrandbreuk (roughly the Roermond-Deurne-Uden-Lith line), which separates the Roerdalslenk from the Peelhorst; and in the southwest the Feldbissbreuk (roughly the line Dessel-Gilze and Rijen-Oosterhout), separating the slime from the Kempens Block.

In the mining time, Bree (Limburg Kempen) and Mol-Rauw (Oosterkempen) originated in the earth's crust with a north-south orientation. Between these two lines of fracture a slope formed, the bottom dropped about 15 meters. The eastern fracture line is called the 'Feldbissbreuk', the western 'Broken of Row'.

This tectonic continental breakdown, which coincided with the propulsion of Alpine mountain formation, also had very important consequences for the course of the Rhine flowing through the Maas Mosel valley.
