International Association of Zoo Educators


The International Association of Zoo Educators (IZEA) is an international organization of educators working in zoos and aquariums.

The IZEA exists, for an indefinite period of time, in the form of an association under Articles 60 to 78 of the Swiss Civil Code. The association is a non-profit organization with international members. The headquarters of the association is located in Switzerland, formerly in Berne and transferred since May 2010 to Gland (Vaud).

The IZEA was established after a meeting of zoo education officers held in Frankfurt am Main, Federal Republic of Germany, on 6 September 1972.

IZEA is an association dedicated to expanding the educational impact of zoos and aquariums around the world. Its mission is to improve educational programs in the facilities of its members, to provide access to the latest thinking, techniques, and information in conservation education and to support excellence in animal care and welfare. IZEA facilitates communication and professional development among zoo and aquarium educators, and serves as a support for liaison with organizations such as WAZA, IUCN, especially the Captive Breeding Specialist Group (CBSG). within IUCN, and others.

In 2002, IZEA becomes an affiliate member of WAZA.

The secretariat of the association is provided, in the form of an agreement of approval, by the Executive Board of the WAZA in Gland (Vaud) in Switzerland. edit code
