Jai Andhra Movement (1972)

Yai Andhra was a movement and political party of the state of Andhra Pradesh, in India. It was a sequel to the Yai Telangana movement (1969-1971) for the separation of the state.

In 1972, villagers on the coast of the state of Andhra Pradesh asked New Delhi to divide their state into two regions:

Several organizations came together to form the Yai Andhra ('victory for Andhra'). On its green flag, the map of the 12 districts where languages other than télugu are spoken and written was drawn.

The movement reached its peak in the first days of January 1973, when the question of the division of the state was the central theme of the country On January 18, 1973, President Indira Gandhi established a state of siege in the region. Some 600 Andhras were killed, mainly by the federal police, and gradually the issue went into torpor.

This movement began to revive in 2006. At present, the claim of both states persists.
