Local Multipoint Distribution Service

Local Multipoint Distribution Service (LMDS) is a broadband radio access technology. It uses frequencies between 26 and 29 GHz. In the United States, frequencies between 31.0 and 31.3 GHz are also used by this technique.

The LMDS is mainly intended for point-to-multipoint applications (a base station communicates with several user stations) over distances of up to 8 kilometers but rapidly limited by rain (given the frequencies used ). The technique can also be used to perform point-to-point links, the coverage distance can then be increased using directional antennas.

The WIMAX technique is now preferred by the LMDS because it offers better bit rates, longer coverage distances and better transmission conditions.
