Movement for Freedom and People's Rights

The Movement for Freedom and the Rights of the People (自由民 権 運動, Jiyū Minken Undō) was a Japanese political and social movement in favor of democracy during the 1880s.

Pursued the formation of an elected legislative power, the revision of unequal treaties with the United States and European countries, the institution of civil rights and the reduction of centralized taxes, this movement induced the Meiji Government to establish a constitution in 1889 and a diet in 1890; on the other hand, it failed in its attempt to reduce control by the central government, and its demands for a real democracy were not heard, with the power remaining in the hands of the Meiji oligarchy. This happened because, among many other limitations, the Meiji Constitution only allowed the right to vote to those who paid a large sum in property taxes, as a result of the Land Tax Reform of 1873.
