Berengaria van Navarra

Navarra Berengaria (approximately between 1165 and 1170 - December 23, 1230) was a daughter of Sancho VI of Navarra and Sancha of Castile. She married Richard Leeuwenhart in 1191, but this marriage remained childless. Modern historians argue that Richard was more interested in Berengaria's brother, the later Sancho VII of Navarre. Along with her husband Berengaria took part in a part of the Third Crusade, but while Berengaria returned to Europe, Richard was caught. They then stayed as a Pope's guest in Rome. Despite the fact that Richard, after his release, still had no successor, he made little effort to see her. She is the only English queen who has never been to England.

After her husband's death in 1199, his successor Jan was inclined to give her the money she had as queen-widow's right. From King Philip II of France she acquired the county of Maine, where she spent the rest of her life.
