Centaurusarm

Observed (solid lines) and extrapolated (dashed lines) representation of the spiral arms of our Milky Way

The Centaurus Arm (or Scutum-Cruxarm) is one of the four major galaxy arms of the Galaxy. The Centaurus Arm is named after the constellation Centaurus seen from Earth on the night sky in the vicinity of this arm. The Centaurus arm is located between the Perseus arm and the Cygnus arm. The Milky Way has a total of four large and at least two smaller arms.

The Centaurus arm is divided into two parts. The first part of the arm that begins at the Galaxy's core is called the Scutum Arm. Further, the arm is also called the Cruxarm. The area where the Centaurus Arm approaches the center of the Milky Way is rich in star-forming areas.
