Francisco León Hermoso

Francisco León Hermoso (Santa Cecilia del Alcor, Palencia, September 17, 1843 - Lourdes (France), July 25, 1897), nicknamed the Noherlesoom, was a meteorological astronomer and Spanish meteorological informer who revolutionized the national meteorological science. Enmity was created in the official meteorological service by medium- and long-term forecasts. But he received the harshest criticism for announcing, days beforehand, the storm that struck Madrid on May 12, 1886. They did not admit that a self-educated man made such predictions. The bi-weekly meteorological Bulletin, launched in 1890, further increased its fame.

The Meteorological Bulletin, founded by Leon Hermoso himself, was published every fortnight between February 1890 and August 1897, making a total of 181 issues. It reached a high number of subscribers, many of them among the official institutions. The annual subscription was 5 pesetas in Madrid and 6 in provinces and the revenues allowed Leon Hermoso to maintain its administration in the numbers 81 and 83 of the Greater street of Madrid. Noherlesoom became the first private operator of meteorology in Spain. The forecast of the bulletin was completed with articles on meteorology and associated topics, description of apparatuses, biographies, data, comments, geographical curiosities, conference proceedings, etc. The collection of the Meteorological Bulletin constitutes a valuable historical source on national and international meteorological activity at the end of the 19th century.

His death occurred in Lourdes (France), which he visited annually, since he was a fervent Catholic.
