The island of the Virgin of the Sea is a massive island of 7.9 hectares very close to the coast of Cantabria (Spain), to which it is united in low tide by means of an arrow of sand, becoming a piston. It is located in the west of Santander, near San Román de la Llanilla. On the island stands a hermitage built in the fifteenth century (when a first wooden bridge was also built that united it with solid land), although later it was rebuilt, where the image of the Virgin of the Sea, that is the patron saint is guarded of Santander and that every year for its festival is transferred in procession from the island to the cathedral santanderina and then returned again to the original place. The island has a small seawall that joins it to land. During the 18th century the island was used by smugglers to introduce illegal goods into Santander.
