Peucolao

Peucolao Currency

Peucolaus Soter Dikaios (Greek: Πευκόλαος ὁ Σωτήρ, ὁ Δίκαιος; the epithets mean respectively, the Savior, the Just) was an Indo-Greek king who ruled in the Gandhara area c. 90 a. C. His reign was probably short and insignificant, as he left only a few coins, but the relations of the last Indo-Greek kings remain largely obscure.

His name could be interpreted as "The man from Pushkalavati", an important Greek city east of Kabul. Peucolao coins

Peucolao minted few standard silver Indian coins, his obverse with a diadem, and reverse Zeus sedente, which resemble the back of the contemporary kings Heliocles II and Archeio. The last one filled two Peucolao coins.

He also issued bilingual bronzes, with Artemis and a woman crowned with a palm branch, perhaps a goddess of the city, or a personification of Tique, the deity for good luck.
