A rebellion is, in most cases, a manifestation of rejection of authority. This can vary from civil disobedience to an organized and armed attempt to destroy established authority. The term is also used to refer to the armed resistance of an insubordinate group against an established government. Those who participate in a rebellion are called rebels.

A similar term is that of sedition, which is understood as a minor degree of rebellion. The riot can be understood, in military and marine terms, as a rebellion located in a unit or ship, but also as another a more generic term. The concepts or terms that have a wider semantic content are those of revolt or uprising.
