Sigrun

Sigrun waiting in the tomb of Helgi.

Sigrún (from the Old Norse: Rune of Victory) is a Valkyrie of Norse mythology. Her story is told in Helgakvida Hundingsbana I and Helgakvida Hundingsbana II, in the poetic Edda. The original editor remarks that it was Sváva reborn.

Hero Helgi Hundingsbane meets her when she was leading a group of nine Valkyrie:

The two fall in love and Sigrun tells Helgi that his father Högni has promised to Höðbroddr, the son of King Granmarr. Helgi invades the kingdom of Granmar and kills all those who oppose his relationship with Sigrún. He only leaves Dagr, Sigrun's brother alive, on the condition that he swear allegiance to Helgi.

Dagr however is bound by honor to avenge the death of his brothers, and after having summoned Odin, the god gives him a spear. In a place called Fjoturlund, Dagr kills Helgi and returns with his sister to tell him what happened. Sigrun puts Dagr under a powerful curse that forces him to live in the forests feeding on carrion.

Helgi is placed in a tomb, but returns from Valhalla one last time to spend a night with his beloved.

Sigrún dies of an early form of sadness, but reborn again as a Valkyrie. In her next life, she is Kára and Helgi is Helgi Haddingjaskati, whose stories are told in Hrómundar saga Gripssonar.
