tursaansydän

Variations of the tursaansydän.

The tursaansydän (Finnish: "heart of Tursas") or mursunsydän ("the heart of the walrus") is an ancient symbol used in Northern Europe, especially in the province of Lapland, probably used in shamanic drums. The symbol comes from prehistoric times and incorporates a swastika.

The tursaansydän is a symbol of good luck and repelling curses, and was used as a decorative motif in wooden furniture and buildings in Finland. During the 18th century the simple swastika became more popular in the wood decoration of Finland than the complex tursaansydän.

It has been speculated that tursaansydän represents the rotating and flying hammer of the thunder god Ukko (in Finland) or Thor (in Scandinavia). It is also possible that the image is a luminous sphere, as in the Slavic beliefs.Another theory is that it is a representation of the heart of the god Tursas or of a walrus. The symbol has probably had many meanings over time. Notes
