Australian Dictionary of Biography


The Australian Dictionary of Biography (ADB or AuDB) is a national cooperative enterprise founded and maintained by the Australian National University (ANU) to produce authoritative biographical articles about outstanding people in the history of Australia. The project has been operating since 1957. The staff in charge is located in the National Center of Biography in the History department of the School of Social Sciences Research of the Australian National University. Since its inception, 4500 authors have contributed to the ADB and its 18 published volumes, from 1966 to 2012, contain about 12,000 academic articles.In addition to the published work, the ADB makes its primary research material accessible to the academic community and to the general public.

On July 6, 2006, Michael Jeffery, Governor General of Australia, launched the Australian Dictionary of Biography Online, that same year he received the Manning Clark House National Culture Prize.The website is a joint production of the ADB and the Australian Science and Technology Heritage Center of the University of Melbourne.
