Belenus

Belenus, also known as Belinus, Belenos or Belanus, is a god in Celtic mythology.

Belenus or Belinus meant bright, resplendent and designated a god of Light, Sun and Fire (all renewing energies). Belenus was the name as much Irish as Gallic and Astur. The Romans assembled under the name of Apollo several Gaulish gods especially in charge of the baths.

Known to the Irish, his name would go to medieval novels. The "Baltenes" were one of the great Irish celebrations that celebrated the 1 of May and that came from the cult to this divinity. She was associated with the goddess Sirona.

In Asturias its name has been reflected in the local toponymy. Thus, in the council of Ponga is the town of Beleño, whose name derives from the Celtic god.

Belenos was also confused with other gods such as with Grannus (the brilliant) venerated in several places, Siannus, patron of the baths of Mont-Doré in Puy de Dôme and Borvo.

It was also known by other names such as: - Grannios and Borno of the Celtic continental - Balor and Beltayne of the Celtic Irish - Beli and Balor of the Celtic Welsh - Bel and Belenos of the Celts of the island of Mann - Bile and Belenos of the Scottish Celts
