Bixie

Bixie, museum Shanghai

The bixie ("evicting evil") is a Chinese fabulous animal, a lion with one or two horns and two, four or no wings. They would have originally served as a wait for the tombs. The animal would be closely related to the Chimaera, which also often confuses it.

The mythical beast often occurs in Han Dynasty art objects (206 BC - 9 AD). It was believed that the magic powers of heavenly animals were activated when objects were made in their form. They expelled evil spirits and protected people. The animals are always displayed horribly, as this would trigger a higher spiritual strength. Trivia

Bixie is also the name given to a fairly new type of race-riding on horses, especially to prepare youth for the real games.
