Cachimbal

Juan Guillermo Brenes Castillo, alias Cachimbal (Cervantes de Alvarado, April 13, 1924 - Cervantes, April 17, 2011), was a Costa Rican politician. He served four times as a deputy in the Legislative Assembly of Costa Rica, always through independent political parties. His nickname is because once in the Legislative Assembly he opposed the purchase of an escalator for the extinct Banco Anglo Costarricense saying that it would cost a "silver cachimbal" (pile of money).

Cachimbal was a deputy of the Independent Party in the Mario Echandi administration (1958-62) and by Unión Agrícola Cartaginés in the administrations of Daniel Oduber Quirós (1974-78), Óscar Arias (1986-90) and José María Figueres Olsen ( 1994-1998). Neighbor of Cervantes de Cartago, in 2008 he retired from politics. He passed away on April 17, 2011 at the age of 88.
