The Old South is an American expression referring to the southeastern region of the United States.

Geographically, the Old South is a subregion of the United States of the South, differentiated from the "Deep South" as the Southern States represented in the original Thirteen Colonies of America, as well as a way of describing the old way of life in the southern United States. Culturally, the term can be used to describe the period before the war. In colonial times, it was dominated largely by slave plantations. Geographical area

The southern colonies were Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. The "Old South" is generally defined as opposed to the Deep South, which includes Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia and Mississippi, and is also further differentiated from inland border states such as Kentucky and West Virginia and the southern peripheral states Florida and Texas.

The "Old South" also refers to Southerners' tradition of voting for the Democratic Party. During the post-Civil War Reconstruction period, many Democrats lost their ability to vote. This made the South Republic Republican until 1877, when Southern Democrats returned to power. Recently this democrat dominance has been eroding, but the South retains its conservative stance. Most of the southern population is now identified with the Republican Party.
