Ölvaldi

In Nordic mythology, Ölvaldi or Alvaldi (Old Norse, the all-powerful one) is a giant. He is the father of Þjazi, Gangr and Idi, and therefore the grandfather of Skaði. According to the Skáldskaparmál, Ölvaldi possessed a lot of gold and when he died, his three sons shared his inheritance in the following way: "they each took as much gold as their mouths could hold". This gave the expression "the words of Þjazi, Gangr or Iði" (for "the word is golden"), as well as the kenning "bite of the giants" to designate gold. Related Articleschange the code
