Pedro Nolasco Mena

Pedro Nolasco Mena, a Chilean businessman and politician.

Son of José Antonio Mena and Gertrudis Ramírez de la Rivilla. He was a merchant and during the process of independence he was elected deputy. He was appointed by Ramon Freire as Minister of Finance in 1823, despite the excuses Nolasco gave for not assuming, as the economic situation was too complicated. During his short ministry, import tariffs were lowered, hoping to combat smuggling, in a clearly liberalistic measure and placing trade ahead of fiscal needs, which would change after his resignation from the ministry and the entry of Diego José Benavente.
