Río San Juan (Nueva Esparta)

For other rivers called San Juan, see Río San Juan (disambiguation).

San Juan is a river located on the slopes of Mount Copey, on Isla Margarita, Venezuela. Its nascent is located in the same hill, that when joining with other sister slopes they form the river as it goes down the hill.

Its channel is irregular, usually dry and only supplied with water in the rainy season. Its dryness originates from the construction of the San Juan reservoir, which is the one that collects all the waters fallen from the same river. Another secondary slope of the same river is used for the manufacture of ice and collection of water for the human consumption. Pollution problem

For 50 years the river has suffered from man's strikes and in its exploitation has become practically a river drainage of sewage from the towns of San Juan, El Espinal and until reaching Cotoperiz. Only in the upper part near the source of the river still a low level of pollution is perceived, only affected by the uncontrolled use that is given to wash cars of the same locals. Recently, in 1994, one of the river flows in Fuentidueño (Chorrito de Fuentidueño), was closed to be used privately, thereby preventing pollution but damaging the natural course of the river
