Turhan Pasha Përmeti

Turhan Pasha Përmeti (1839? - 1927) was an Albanian politician in the service of the Ottoman Empire and later Prime Minister of the independent state of Albania during the reign of Prince William Frederick of Wied.

During the Ottoman era, he was governor of the island of Crete in 1895-1896. He spoke fluent Greek and was considered a capable administrator, though characterized by indecision. Its time on the island of Crete culminates with the insurrection of May 24, 1896, which culminated in the loss of the island by the Ottoman Empire. Later he was ambassador in St. Petersburg.

He served as Prime Minister of Albania in 1914, and then again in 1918-1920. He succeeded Fejzi Bej Alizoti, thus being the third prime minister of Albania and the first to serve under the reign of Prince Wied. Contemporaries argued that, as Përmeti was not familiar with the Albanian national cause, he lacked knowledge about the needs of Albanians. In fact, his mandate was twice interrupted by the discontent of the Albanian people. He was overthrown by Essad Pasha in 1914, and subsequently by the Congress of Lushnjë in 1920.
