William the Victorious (Duke of Brunswick-Luneburg)


William (ca. 1392 - 1482), called the Victorious, was Duke of Brunswick-Luneburg. He is also known as William III or William IV. It was my member of the Order of the Garter.

He was the eldest son of Henry I of Brunswick-Luneburg. He inherited Luneburg-Celle in 1416 and changed with his uncle Bernardo I of Brunswick-Lüneburg the principality of Wolfenbüttel in 1428. During a campaign in 1432, William was deposed by his brother Henry the Pacific (Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg). William retained only the western part of Wolfenbüttel (west of the River Leine and separated from the rest by the Bishopric of Hildesheim), which was to be known as the Principality of Calenberg. After Henry died without children in 1473, William returned to rule in the two parts of Wolfenbüttel. Family

In 1466, William married Matilde, daughter of Otto II of Holstein-Schauenburg-Pinneburg, who died in Neustadt am Rübenberge on July 22, 1468, two days after giving birth to a son who died as a child, Otto (born in Neustadt am Rübenberge on July 20, 1468 and died in 1471).
