This article is about Odin's drill. For the goddess of love in Hinduism, see Rati (goddess). "Odin obtains magical mead for men" by Willy Pogany. The Jotun Baugi holds the hole while Odin enters the hole.

In Norse mythology, Rati is the name of the drill or hole that Odin used during his mission to obtain the mead of the poetry of the giant Suttung with the help of Baugi, brother of the giant. According to the Gylfaginning section of the prosaic edda, Odin instructed Baugi to drill a hole through the Hnitbjorg mountain where the mead was kept. When Baugi claimed that the hole was made, Odin blew inside and the pieces of stone turned towards him. Realizing that Baugi had not drilled to the other side and that he was trying to cheat, he asked him to drill again; the pieces this time flew inward. Odin was transformed into a snake, and when he entered the hole, Baugi tried to kill him with the drill, but failed. This is how Odin was able to obtain the mead.
