Ménalo (monte)

Ménalo (in modern Greek Μαίναλο, ancient Μαίναλος and Μαίναλον, in Latin Maenalus) is a mountain of Arcadia (Greece) located to the northwest of the present city of Tripoli.

It is the highest mountain in the Arcadia region. It covers an area between 15 and 20 km from north to south and 5 to 10 km from east to west. It was covered by native forest, but most caught fire in 2000 and especially in September 2011. It has a ski resort located 1,550 m high. Antiquity

Its name comes from a mythological personage named Ménalo, son of Licaón. In antiquity the city of the same name stretched at its feet, Ménalo in the plain called Menalia. The mountain was consecrated to the god Pan who therefore received the nickname of Menalio. On this hill the god Pan raised the hunting dogs that he gave to the hunting goddess Artemis.
