Pedro José Sáenz-Vázquez de Quintanilla and Lanini


Pedro José Sáenz-Vázquez de Quintanilla y Lanini (n. Ciudad Real de Chiapas, June 29, 1669 - m Cubujuquí (now Heredia), Costa Rica, on August 15, 1752) was an Indian official and military , in charge of the government of the province of Costa Rica from December 1735 to January 1736.

He was the son of Juan Francisco Sáenz-Vázquez de Quintanilla and Sendín de Sotomayor, governor of Costa Rica from 1674 to 1681, and his second wife Barbara Lanini and Priami. He was baptized on July 9, 1670 in the parish of El Sagrario in Ciudad Realde Chiapas.

He came to Costa Rica at a very young age, with his parents and brothers, in 1674. Initially he thought of following the ecclesiastical career and received the minor orders, but he did not follow the studies and contracted nuptials in the city of Carthage the 29 of April 1690, with Maria de la Rosa Vázquez Retes (in Carthage on July 24, 1738), great-granddaughter of the late Gonzalo Vázquez de Coronado. From this marriage were born: 1) Gregorio Sáenz de Quintanilla y Vázquez (n. 1694), married in first nuptials in 1724 with Francisca de Castro and Arias and in second in 1756 with Antonia Josefa de Soto; 2) José Antonio (1696-1729), married in 1795 with Rosa Gutiérrez and Bernal; 3) Francisco Dionisio (1699-1701); 4) Manuel (1702 and died around 1775), married in 1729 with Antonia de Bonilla and Astúa (m. And 1733); and 5) Josefa (1706-1789) married in 1732 with Cristobal Jiménez and Martínez de Herrera.

He was ordinary mayor of Carthage from 1714 to 1716 and lieutenant general of Carthage and his jurisdiction from 1724 to 1727. From December 1735 to January 1736 he was temporarily in charge of the Costa Rican government, replacing Governor Baltasar Francisco de Valderrama and Haro and Portillo.

In 1736 he was appointed as first lieutenant governor of Aserri, within whose jurisdiction was erected in 1737 the parish aid of San José de la Boca del Monte, around which formed the population called La villita and gave origin to the present city of San José.
