Visingso

Visingsö is an island in the southern half of Lake Vättern in Sweden.

It is located 30 km north of the city of Jönköping and 6 km to the west of Gränna, from where two ferries depart that connect with the island. The island is 14 km long and 3 km wide, with a total area of 24 km². According to an ancient legend, a giant named Vist created Visingsö by throwing a bundle of dirt to the lake so his wife could cross it. History

In the 12th and 13th century, Näs Castle on the southern tip of the island was the residence of the then fragile Swedish monarchy. Four Swedish kings died there: Charles VII Sverkersson, Erik X Knutsson, John I Sverkersson and Magnus Ladulás. During the seventeenth century, the influential Brahe family resided in Visingsborg, a castle on the east side of the island. Both the castle of Näs and Visingsborg are recognized landmarks of the island of Visingsö. In the 19th century, the Swedish navy planted oaks to provide timber for future shipbuilding. The wood is now ready, but it is no longer required for the navy. Consequently, Visingsö is partially covered by oaks, the remainder being arable land.
