Civil War of the Kingdom of the Congo

The Civil War of the Kingdom of the Congo was an internal conflict that affected that kingdom between 1665 and 1709 by the vacant throne after the death of António I in the battle of Ambuíla between the noble houses of Kilanza and Kimpanzu. In subsequent civil wars, numerous suitors claimed to be descendants of one or other of the houses, such as Alvaro XIV of Congo and Silva de Soyo. The war greatly weakened the kingdom, its capital, M'Banza Kongo, was destroyed and many bacongos were sold as slaves.

The destruction of the capital of the kingdom in 1678 meant the end of the ancient kingdom of the Congo for almost twenty years, a period in which the country is de facto divided into three rival kingdoms led by the claimants of the Congo throne. / p>
