Dalton McGuinty

Dalton James Patrick McGuinty, Jr. (Ottawa, Ontario, July 19, 1955) is a Canadian politician. From October 23, 2003 to 2013 he was Prime Minister of Ontario.

McGuinty, member of the Ontario Liberal Party won the seat in the parliament of Ontario in 1990 at provincial elections, previously occupied by his father. After several successive election prosecutions of the Liberals, McGuinty gained leadership in 1996, after which he also became leader of the opposition in the provincial parliament. His first electoral test came in 1999 when his party again received an election defeat and McGuinty himself retained his own seat by a small majority.

In 2003, the Liberals under the leadership of McGuinty won the elections and formed his first government. He followed Ernie Eves as Prime Minister of Ontario. Soon in his first year as prime minister, McGuinty broke his main election promise not to increase taxes. He did this because, according to him, the previous government under Eves had left a larger budget deficit than expected.

McGuinty's popularity got a lot of dough in the early years, but he gradually recovered more credit. In 2007, Liberals won a second term in Ontario. Externe link
