Labor Democratic Party (Barbados)

The Democratic Labor Party (DLP) is a democratic socialist party, which now governs Barbados. Another socialist democratic party, the Labor Party of Barbados (BLP) is the main opposition party in the country. Led by Mia Mottley, the BLP has 10 seats of 30 available in the Assembly since January 2008. It is a full member of the Socialist International.

The DLP was founded in 1955 by Errol Barrow. He was a member of the Labor Party of Barbados that came out of this for forms a more left-wing alternative. In spite of that, and because of having the same origins, the two parties always maintained a similar ideological position. As the founders of the Labor Party, the DLP were also committed to the universarl vote for adults, free education, and better living and health conditions for all. Many of its members, most notably Errol Barrow, did much to make this happen.

After being in opposition since 1994, the DLP won the general election on January 15, 2008 with 20 of the 30 seats in the Assembly, increasing its number by 6 compared to the previous election. The party is led by Prime Minister David Thompson.
