The Nierenberg Prize for Science in the Public Interest is an annual prize awarded by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. It was created following a donation from the family of William Nierenberg to honor his memory.

The award is accompanied by a bronze medal and an endowment of US $ 25,000.

William Nierenberg (1919-2000) was a well-known scientist who worked at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography as a director between 1965 and 1986.
