Sonia Gandhi (Hindi: सोनिया गाँधी) (Lusiana, December 9, 1946) is an Indian politician and the president of the Congress Party. She is the widow of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
Sonia Gandhi was born as Edward Antonia Albina Maino in Lusiana, a village 20 km away from Vicenza in Italy. When she followed English in Cambridge in English, she met Rajiv Gandhi. They were married in 1968, after which they lived in India. Here she got two children, including a son, Rahul Gandhi. Her mother-in-law Indira Gandhi gave her the name 'Sonia'. In 1983 she received Indian nationality. After the murder of her husband on May 21, 1991 she became active in politics.
