Willem II of Villehardouin

Wilhelm II of Villehardouin (? -1278), the prince of Achaea, was a warlike prince. He led a messy life with his capital Mystras as a center. He married Anna Komnena, the daughter of Michaël II Komnenos Doukas, despote of Epirus, and they received two daughters, Isabella and Margaretha. In 1259, Willem was captured in the Battle of Pelagonia by Emperor Michael VIII of Nicea (who would reconquer Constantinople in 1261 on the western crusaders and restore the Byzantine Empire). In order to obtain his release, the Villehardouin was forced into major concessions: including Mystras, Monemvasia and the Mani.

After his release, he unsuccessfully tried to reverse the tide, including through an alliance with King Charles I of Naples and Sicily. He died in 1278, and his death put an end to the male line of the Villehardouins. He was succeeded by his daughter Isabella and his son-in-law Floris van Henegouwen.
