Willem V of Monferrato

Willem V of Monferrato, nicknamed the Old, (1110-1191) was a son of Reinier I of Monferrato and Gisela of Burgundy. He was married to Judith van Babenberg, daughter of Leopold III of Austria, and became the father of:

Willem participated in the Second Crusade, along with his half-brother Amadeus III of Savoy, his cousin Louis VII of France, his brother-in-law Gwijde van Biandrate and his wife's German and Austrian relatives. As followers of the emperor (later known as the Ghibell lines), he and his sons fought Frederik Barbarossa (Judith's cousin) during the long war with the Lombard League. Afterwards, he broke with Frederik Barbarossa and entered into a covenant with Byzantine Emperor Manuel I Komnenos, who also married their children Reinier and Maria.
