Donald Johanson

Donald Johanson

Donald Carl Johanson (Chicago, Illinois, June 28, 1943) is an American paleo anthropologist.

He became known by the discovery in November 1974 of "Lucy", a skeleton of a female hominide (human) in the state of Afar of Ethiopia and therefore received the scientific name Australopithecus afarensis. The age of the skeleton is estimated at 3.18 million years. Johanson made his discovery during an anthropological mission sponsored by, among other things, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, where he worked. He led the mission together with Yves Coppens and Maurice Taieb.

Lucy was named so because the Beatle song "Lucy in the sky with diamonds" was rotated while puzzling the skeleton.
