Gunnar Knudsen


Aanon Gunerius "Gunnar" Knudsen (Saltrød, September 19, 1848 - Skien, December 1, 1928) was a Norwegian politician for the Left. Knudsen owned various shipping companies.

He was a representative in the Norwegian parliament since 1891 and chairman of his party from 1909. Knudsen became Minister of Finance in 1905. He was Prime Minister of Norway from 1908 to 1910 and from 1913 to 1920.

His first term of office saw the introduction of the 1909 Health Insurance Act, with mandatory coverage for employees under a certain income (about 45% of all wage earners) and the same year free maternity care for unmarried mothers, extended in 1915 with the wives of the men who fell under compulsory health insurance.
