Karamea (place)

Karamea is a small place in the West Coast region on the south coast of New Zealand. It is the northernmost place of some significance in the West Coast region, 100 kilometers north of Westport. The Oparara River runs through the area and there are large natural river tunnels. There is also a large lagoon that is completely dry at eb. History

The first European and Chinese immigrants in this area were gold seekers and came around 1860. The first settlement was established in 1874. In addition to farmers, there was also a wood and flax industry in this region. In 1929 the area was hit by an earthquake that caused the bay to which Karamea was to be salted and the road to the town was closed for two years.
