Ahuir

Ahuir is the name given to a 12th century Spanish ditch in the Valencian Community, which runs through the municipal boundaries of Jaraco, Jeresa and Gandía from north to south and parallel to the coast, through the interior of the marshes. It was built by the population in order to empty the excess water and allow the crops.

Because of its low flow rate, it is considered that its movement is undetectable and with little seasonal variation. However, there is a very important fresh water aquifer under the marsh; this aquifer prevents the entrance of salt water from the sea, with the consequent salinization, which gives an idea of the importance of this marsh and its aquifer.

When the marsh is flooded during heavy rains, there are pumping stations that draw water from this channel to drain into the sea and lower the water level. At times, the accumulation of dirt in the ditch has provoked neighborhood protests. Ahuir beach

This ditch has given its name to a beach located in the municipality of Gandía. It is an isolated beach, but with all kinds of services; well equipped and in which you can practice nudism.
